About Pit Bulls & Bully BreedsWhat is a ‘Pit Bull’? What is a ‘Bully Breed’?
“Pit Bull” is an umbrella term commonly used when referring to a small group of dog breeds, which includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The slightly broader term, “Bully Breed”, loosely applies to any dog with a stocky, muscular build and broad, square head (including “pit bulls”). Bully breeds tend to be enthusiastic, physically strong and highly determined dogs with an intense eagerness to please their handlers. Due to their muscular physique and energetic personality, ‘bullies’ require a fair amount of physical exercise and sufficient mental stimulation. Due to these qualities, bullies are best suited for homes with experienced dog owners. When these needs are not met, bully breeds make their way into animal shelters at alarming numbers. Offering specialized classes for bully breeds provides bully owners with the opportunity to learn more about the benefits of clear, consistent leadership and how to care for their dogs. |
